His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama joined Whole Child International in Los Angeles on Feb. 20-21, 2010, to address the emotional needs of vulnerable children worldwide. During two days with Whole Child, His Holiness engaged philanthropists, academics, government officials, and the public on how to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children around the globe. Throughout the weekend, His Holiness compelled audiences with how nurturing children through strong and loving bonds is at the core of a child’s emotional health and well-being — and that all children deserve compassionate, loving care. His Holiness spoke of how the love and attention we receive as children enables us to grow into adults who are able to care for others. Loving care during infancy is the strongest root for a compassionate life, and these ideas are at the center of Whole Child’s program. Representatives from faith-based, policy, philanthropic, and academic institutions met with Whole Child and His Holiness to spur policy action to address the needs of vulnerable children.
On Saturday, His Holiness engaged the audience at a special luncheon with television journalist Giselle Fernandez on the needs of vulnerable children and the connection between nurturing and compassion. On Sunday, at the Gibson Amphitheater, he delivered his first public address in Los Angeles in more than three years. Our founder Karen Spencer welcomed the crowd of nearly 6,000 people before Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow performed a short set preceding His Holiness’ speech. He also spoke with Larry King on CNN in association with the event. (See also the website of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for more information.)
