Facility Modifications
Inevitably, it is necessary to update facilities in order to support organizational changes. For instance, since many
institutions have been structured for as many as fifty children per group, the scale of sleeping and living spaces may
need to be reworked in order to accommodate the new smaller group sizes. Other modifications may include improved access
to the outdoors and more efficient use of space to maximize time for caregiver-child interactions, such as the strategic
placement of running water. In many cases, children in orphanages spend the entire day without even a single toy, inhibiting
physical and cognitive development. Whole Child programs provide inexpensive, culturally appropriate materials for play.
